I was working with a client a few days ago when I asked her a simple question, “tell me something you like about your body.”

The silence was enormous.

She was at a loss. She had a litany of criticisms but struggled to reach for the light, her light.

Her negative self-talk game was strong. Her inner critic raged loud and clear.

“I don’t like my hips.”

“If I could just lose some weight I would feel better.”

“I hate the way my arms jiggle.”

I tried again, “tell me one thing you like about your body.”

She was struggling to come up with an answer. I understood how she felt. When you have grown accustomed to speaking and thinking negatively about yourself, it isn’t so easy to come up with a new thought. An uplifting thought that feels authentic.

So what direction did I give her?

@@Start with one undeniable truth about yourself.@@ Acknowledging the good you see in yourself has a powerful impact on your self-esteem and will begin to shift your perspective.

@@Be intentional about how you speak to and about yourself.@@ Negative self-talk suppresses energy and negates action. When your inner dialogue starts to go downhill, reach for that one undeniable truth. Say it out loud. Say it in front of the mirror. Speak light into that one thing. As you place your attention on the one thing you love about yourself, you will naturally begin to find more things to love.

@@Be your own cheerleader, your own support system.@@ How would you talk to your best friend or your lover? It’s so easy to be kind to others. Turn that kindness inward. Practice self-compassion. See the good in yourself. @@Learn to be gentle with yourself.@@ You wouldn’t let your best friend put herself down. The same rules apply to you.

For every one negative thought you have about yourself, say two things out loud that you like about yourself. Doing this will put you in the groove of seeing yourself in a different light. @@Your words are powerful so use them to your benefit. Speak positivity into your life.@@
